The school has been added to the world map for the International Year of the Periodic Table , as it joins the global science community in celebrating the th anniversary of the periodic table of the elements. LC students will continue their scientific exploration of the periodic table on Thursday through the school's Science Speaker Series. Each January for the past seven years, seniors have gone into the community and given back by volunteering at more than 25 sites.

This year, the class of collectively volunteered for nearly 2, hours in one week, serving seniors, children and families at organizations across the Merrimack Valley region. Collectively, the class has served more than 6, hours of community service this school year alone. Serving in a second-grade classroom, Jamison became inspired by the young faces that counted him as their friend and a gentle giant. Jamison admitted it was an adjustment to be back in the classroom at LC after a week in second grade, but he looks forward to serving in future leadership roles and has plans to attend Louisiana State University for communications after graduating.

Senior Service Week is run in conjunction with LC's CSL program, which requires students to perform more than hours of community service as a requirement for graduation.

This spring, each senior will give a presentation titled "My Mark on the World" to a panel of teachers and community members reflecting on the impact their service has had on them and their community, and to report any plans to continue their service in the future. A Lowell Catholic team of 10 students spent eight days in the Dominican Republic over holiday break. The annual trip to the Hogar Immanuel Orphanage and Mustard Seed Communities allows students not only to practice their world-language skills, but also to give back to the community through service learning.

After the food and necessities were purchased, the team proceeded to buy three small bikes as an extra treat for the children. The program dedicates time for teachers and students to explore educational endeavors and community-service opportunities beyond the classroom, without disrupting the normal course of study. Exciting events, field trips and retreats populate the January calendar, adding an air of excitement and new experiences in the new year.

This year, some of LC's elementary students will travel to Cambridge to spend day at the MIT Labs; band students will enjoy a full session with their high-school counterparts; and many middle-school students will engage in leadership activities on retreat. Younger students will engage in hands-on learning projects in the arts and sciences, working collaboratively throughout the two-week intersession with classmates and interacting with students from other grades.

High-school students have taken advantage of the Winter Intersession with engaging and educational field trips. Students who attended LC's Summer Senior Leadership Institute have served as student leaders for middle-school retreats. Meanwhile, juniors attended a "Crusaders in Action" retreat, and sophomores are learning about building positive peer relationships and a stronger community at LC. Service to others is a way of life at LC, and each student is required to serve a minimum of hours of community service before graduating. LC will hold an open house Sunday, Jan.

Students enrolled in the Excel Bridge program are able to matriculate into LC's high-school level Math and World Language courses, allowing teachers to inspire and challenge them at their academic and maturity levels. Beyond the traditional middle-school course work, advanced classes are offered to middle-school students who are able to show advanced academic competencies.

Annual assessments allow individualized academic placement so students may move forward at a pace that will bring them the greatest success. Students who are placed in advanced and high-school level courses during middle school will enter high school ahead, enabling them to take additional Advanced Placement courses as upperclassmen.

Ultimately, this results in Lowell Catholic High School students graduating with college-level work before their freshman semester.

Student-athletes who excel are afforded the opportunity to compete at the high-school level in several sports as well. LC Middle School students are exposed to the arts throughout their academic career. Each middle-school student is enrolled in a weekly STREAM course with the goal of creating and producing original ideas. Through teamwork, creativity and collaboration, students develop their own objects and structures according to certain specifications using concepts and skills from Math, Science, Religion, Art and Technology classes.

On Tuesday, Dec. Each year, students and faculty gather to honor veterans, remembering especially Pfc John F. Landry Jr. At the prayer service, this year's recipient, senior Rowan Ruggiero, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. Head of School Maryellen Demarco noted that in her time at Lowell Catholic, several students had made the honorable and brave choice not only to serve their community but to serve their country. She urged students to keep them in their prayers.

A cocktail reception starts at 6 p. Working in teams, they evaluated their created product over a group of commercially available ones, according to three criteria of green chemistry: safety, cost and performance. Students formulated products like shampoo, face wash, mascara, toothpaste, soaps and lotions, among others. Using resources organized by LC librarian Melissa Jackson, students were tasked with determining how safe products are based on the potential harmful effects of the ingredients.

Utilizing AP Chemistry students at LC as mentors, sophomores designed their own products and experimented to determine how well their chosen products perform. Students designed and manufactured their own alternative products that meet the green-chemistry criteria.

With the help of Fine Arts Department Chairwoman Heather Falardeau, students created product labels and full-color advertisements to market their product to the public. They also filmed a public-service announcement to educate people on sustainable development and the importance of considering safety, cost and performance when purchasing products. Lowell Catholic offers students many opportunities to learn in a hands-on setting with practical real-world applications for their work. Also, during LC's Winter Intersession, these students will be further challenged to use mycelium, a mushroom-based material, to engineer a sustainable packing material to protect their product if they were to manufacture it for distribution.

LC's percent graduation rate and percent college-acceptance rate are a credit to the school's to-1 student-teacher ratio that provides specialized, supportive and personal learning at every grade level. LC's dedicated college guidance counselors also help steer students toward earning top college scholarships.

Such successes are now being cultivated at the middle-school level. The curriculum continuity provides students with a seamless transition from eighth grade to high school. Through the Excel Bridge program, students who are outperforming their grade level in middle-school Math and World Languages are able to take freshman courses on the same campus.

Doing so means that as seniors, they'll be able to take on more academically challenging AP courses, and complete college credits, during their high-school years. A good example is Kyle Deroma, a senior from Dracut, who is currently enrolled both at LC and UMass Lowell through a partnership developed to challenge high-school students.

Kyle began the dual-enrollment program in his junior year. Josh Fiorentino, a senior from Groton, will complete four AP courses this year, putting him one full semester ahead of his peers when entering college next fall. He also completed a summer internship learning about structural engineering on campus at LC. Maggie McGovern, a senior from Lowell, inspired by LC's Science Speaker Series and her love of the ocean, has enrolled in an online course in Oceanography this semester. Caleb Craig, a senior from Tyngsboro credits his opportunities at LC in acting, leadership, public speaking, AP English and online courses in Journalism that have guided him to choose a journalism focus for his future career.

Staying Safe Online

The positive encouragement to collectively succeed and strive to achieve is felt across campus. When I came to LC I was convinced I was a math and science student, but the teachers here have opened my mind and truly engaged me in subjects I never thought I'd enjoy.

In addition to excelling academically, over 85 percent of LC students are involved in one of the many co-curricular activities or athletics, and percent of LC graduates have completed a minimum of community-service learning hours. The pep band, made up of students in grades , played such classics as Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," worked well together and sounded great. LC looks forward to the band's growth as a permanent accompaniment to home football games. As students bonded and began to unite as a class through ice-breakers, friendly competitions and outdoor fun led by the Campus Ministry team and student leaders, parents settled in for an informational session and a meet-and-greet with teachers and staff members who will be the foundation of their student's educational experience for the next four years.

Seeing the friendly faces of our amazing staff, understanding the expectations and finding avenues to succeed in high school are all very important components of bringing together a united and cohesive school community. All of those moments were designed to assist in merging rising LC elementary students and newcomers into the LC community as new friendships are forged and bonds are created.
